Forests have always had an ancient, mystical charm that few can resist.
Thus, forests are the habitat of many supernatural beings from the mythological world. According to the national beliefs of Croatia in the forests, we can encounter fairies, forest veds, wild girls, small hunters, devils, witches...
In times of our ancient forests, the forests were lush; the rainforest. Our old ancestor felt, at the same time, gratitude and awe towards the forests. Their life was dependent on the wood - it was used for heat, making of the tools. Forests were used for finding food, and for shelter. Unlike the forest, the lifetime of our ancestor was short and he, therefore, attributed divine significance to the forest to every great, multitudinous tree, and believed that it had divine power. Trees, by tradition, have long been an important place in the narrative of many religions. For example, oak is associated with very interesting beliefs in Croatia, but also in many other nationalities. Oak was considered a sacred tree, it was a symbol of divinity and it was believed that because of its divinity, it attracted the thunder. Part of the tree's beliefs has been preserved in Croatian regions to date and is transmitted through narratives and sermons, especially in rural areas.
